Themata is a new monograph series founded in 2020, specifically devoted to Byzantine studies. The title of the series is a play on words between theme as a subject and themes (θεματα) as ancient Byzantine military and civil territorial subdivisions, that had been established during the course of the 7th century. The subtitle, “The Byzantine West / Bisanzio in Occidente”, serves as to both clarify the geographical frame of reference and to stimulate historic and archaeological research on the Western territories of the Byzantine Empire. The series includes monographs and conference proceeding, devoted to Byzantine studies, from an inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary perspective. In this respect, it is open also to related themes, particularly regarding the environmental sciences and new technologies, including climatology, hydrology, and environmental archaeology, as well as the developing fields of palaeogenetics, isotopic and molecular studies, LiDAR, artificial intelligence. The logo for the series has been taken from an 11th or 12th-century bread-stamp for Easter eulogies found during excavations at the Italo-Greek monastery of S. Maria di Cerrate, north of Lecce.
